NEW DELHI: Several Indian Institutes of Technology have commenced pilot programmes integrating civil services examination preparation into their undergraduate curriculum, marking a significant shift in technical education policy under the National Education Policy framework. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between technical education and public administration aspirations among engineering students.

The programme, launched across select IITs, offers optional modules in public policy, governance, and administrative law alongside core engineering subjects. Students can now pursue their technical degrees while developing competencies required for the Union Public Service Commission examinations, addressing the growing trend of engineering graduates shifting to civil services.

Education ministry officials indicate that the integration responds to concerns about engineering talent moving away from technical fields. The structured approach seeks to create a pathway for technically qualified civil servants whilst ensuring students complete their primary engineering education without academic disruption.

The universities have designed the curriculum to maintain academic rigour in both domains, with additional faculty appointments in humanities and social sciences. Other central universities are monitoring the implementation closely, with possibilities of similar programmes being introduced in science and liberal arts institutions. The initiative represents one of the more substantial curricular reforms under the ongoing National Education Policy implementation across higher education institutions.
