NEW DELHI: Several Indian Institutes of Technology have announced the introduction of integrated programmes combining technical education with civil services preparation, marking a significant shift in how premier engineering institutions engage with public administration careers.
The new four-year undergraduate courses will blend core engineering disciplines with subjects relevant to the Union Public Service Commission examinations, including public policy, governance, economics, and Indian administrative systems. The initiative comes as part of the National Education Policy's emphasis on multidisciplinary learning and flexibility in higher education.
The programmes aim to address the growing trend of engineering graduates pursuing civil services instead of technical careers, a phenomenon that has sparked debate about talent utilization in recent years. Students will have the option to exit with a technical degree or continue with an integrated pathway that includes administrative studies.
Education ministry officials have welcomed the development as an innovative interpretation of NEP guidelines, which encourage institutions to offer diverse learning pathways. The participating IITs are expected to collaborate with established civil services coaching institutions and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration to develop curriculum content and teaching methodologies for the specialized courses.
