As mercury levels cross 40 degrees Celsius across Bihar, the demand for cold beverages has surged dramatically, with cafes reporting a threefold increase in iced coffee sales. However, nutritionists are raising concerns about the health implications of sugar-laden beverages like caramel-based iced mochas that have become summer favourites among young adults.

Dr Priya Sharma, a Patna-based dietician, explains that a single serving of sweetened iced coffee can contain upwards of 400 calories and 50 grams of sugar—exceeding the World Health Organization's recommended daily limit. "These beverages, while refreshing, contribute significantly to obesity and type 2 diabetes, conditions already affecting 8.9% of Bihar's adult population according to the National Family Health Survey," she noted.

The trend is particularly concerning given Bihar's growing diabetes burden, with cases rising by 23% in the past five years. Health experts recommend alternatives such as unsweetened cold brew coffee, coconut water, or traditional drinks like sattu sherbet that provide hydration without excessive sugar. "Moderation is key," adds Dr Sharma. "If you must indulge, limit such drinks to once weekly and choose smaller portions."

The state health department has launched awareness campaigns about healthy beverage choices as part of its ongoing initiative against lifestyle diseases.
