Following Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's endorsement of Tezpur's geographically-indicated litchis, health experts are emphasising the nutritional benefits of consuming locally-grown seasonal fruits across India, including Bihar's own litchi-producing regions like Muzaffarpur.
Nutritionists point out that litchis are rich in vitamin C, providing nearly 72 mg per 100 grams—more than the daily recommended intake for adults. The fruit also contains polyphenols and antioxidants that strengthen immunity, particularly crucial during India's intense summer months when heat-related illnesses spike. The high water content, approximately 82%, aids in maintaining hydration levels.
Dr Anjali Mukherjee, a Delhi-based clinical nutritionist, explains that seasonal fruits like litchis are naturally adapted to address region-specific health needs. "The body's requirements change with seasons, and local summer fruits provide precisely what we need—hydration, cooling properties, and immune support," she notes.
However, experts caution moderation, especially for children. Bihar has historically witnessed cases of encephalitis linked to excessive litchi consumption on empty stomachs. Health officials recommend limiting intake to 5-6 fruits daily and ensuring children eat proper meals before consuming litchis. The emphasis remains on celebrating India's diverse fruit heritage while maintaining nutritional awareness for optimal health benefits.
