NEW DELHI: The central government has announced an expansion of the Ayushman Bharat programme, transforming Health and Wellness Centres across the country into community-based medical research hubs. The initiative aims to strengthen India's primary healthcare data infrastructure while maintaining the scheme's focus on accessible treatment for economically vulnerable populations.
Under the enhanced mandate, these centres will collaborate with medical institutions to collect anonymised health data on prevalent non-communicable diseases, maternal health outcomes, and the effectiveness of preventive care interventions. The research component will operate alongside existing services without disrupting patient care, according to ministry officials.
The programme will prioritise rural and semi-urban centres, where comprehensive health data has historically been limited. Trained health workers will document treatment patterns and disease prevalence, contributing to a national database that researchers can access for evidence-based policymaking. The initiative also includes provisions for integrating traditional medicine practices with modern healthcare protocols.
Public health experts have welcomed the development as a significant step towards understanding healthcare challenges at the grassroots level.
