With World Thyroid Day approaching on May 25, medical experts are highlighting the crucial role of nutrition in maintaining thyroid health. Dr Ramesh Kinha has outlined five evidence-based dietary recommendations to support optimal functioning of this vital endocrine gland.

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, regulates metabolism, energy levels, and numerous bodily functions through hormone production. Thyroid disorders affect millions of Indians, with iodine deficiency remaining a significant concern despite national fortification programmes. Dr Kinha emphasizes that proper nutritional intake can significantly reduce the risk of thyroid complications.

The five key recommendations include ensuring adequate iodine consumption through iodized salt and seafood, maintaining sufficient selenium levels found in nuts and whole grains, consuming zinc-rich foods such as legumes and seeds, avoiding excessive consumption of goitrogens found in raw cruciferous vegetables, and ensuring adequate vitamin D through sunlight exposure and fortified foods. These nutrients work synergistically to support thyroid hormone synthesis and metabolism.

In Bihar, where healthcare access remains challenging in rural areas, preventive nutritional measures become even more critical. Health authorities encourage regular thyroid screening, particularly for women who face higher risk of thyroid disorders. Simple dietary modifications can serve as the first line of defence in maintaining endocrine health and preventing complications that affect quality of life.
