For individuals managing hypertension with medication, a blood pressure reading of 130/70 mmHg generally indicates that the treatment is working effectively, though it may not yet be at the optimal target level, according to medical professionals.
Dr Rajesh Kumar, a cardiologist at Patna's Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, explains that while this reading shows significant improvement from uncontrolled hypertension, current guidelines recommend maintaining blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg for most patients. "A reading of 130/70 demonstrates good medication adherence and positive response to treatment. However, patients should continue regular monitoring and follow their physician's advice," he stated.
The systolic pressure of 130 mmHg sits at the borderline, while the diastolic reading of 70 mmHg falls within the normal range. Healthcare experts emphasise that target blood pressure levels may vary based on individual factors including age, overall health conditions, and presence of diabetes or kidney disease. Some patients, particularly elderly individuals, may have slightly different target ranges prescribed by their doctors.
With Bihar reporting increasing cases of lifestyle-related diseases, health officials stress the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring, medication compliance, and lifestyle modifications including reduced salt intake, regular exercise, and stress management. Patients are advised against adjusting medications without consulting their healthcare provider, even when readings appear stable.
